Monday's Meditation

"The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God." - Romans 8:6-8

If you spend much time in or around the Evangelical camp, you may hear quite a bit of bashing of the Law of God. They'll say things like, "We don't need to observe the law, we're saved by grace!" To be sure, that we are saved by grace is quite true. But I do not quite understand this attitude towards the Law. It seems to me that while we are not "saved" - whatever that means - by the Law, the Law is still a good thing for us to observe. It appears that the Law "Don't covet your neighbor's wife," or, "Honor your mother and father," still produce "life and peace."

If you haven't
guessed, I'm quite dismayed over the lack of honor given to God's Law in the current church culture. The Law is a beautiful thing as it reflects not only our intended purpose and constitution as beings in communion with both God and Humanity, but also gives us insight into the Mind of God. As we continue to seek what what it is that pleases God, we would do well to heed Proverbs One and "Delight in and meditate upon God's Law day and night."
