Glad to be alive

1967
  • Twenty one three and a half foot by six plus feet panels
  • Between one hundred and one hundred thirty lines of names per panel
  • Each line contained between 5 and 6 names

My dad arrived in Vietnam in 1967
And left in 1969
Yesterday, as I sat trying to absorb the meaning of the names in front of me
I realized how lucky I am to be alive
It's hard enough to be born
Harder still when your dad's being shot at
In the height of war

The Wall, cold and dark
Names etched in white across blackness
Like the souls once attached to them
Numbers...
Rows...
Lines...
Names...
People...
Lives...
Try explaining this to a four year old
She doesn't get it
I'm not sure I do either
