The First of the Lasts Goodbye Tour

Starting last night, Mrs. Expat Teacher and I started our "First of the Last Goodbyes Tour". Rather than have a big bash, we've decided to meet with close friends in smaller settings. Big parties aren't really our thing and they don't generally leave much time for good quality time. I expected that we'd leave each get-together with tears in our eyes and lumps in our throats. We haven't. It isn't that we won't miss our friends. We will, but we also realized that much of our relationship building has been via electronic mediums. We instant message, e-mail and visit each other's blogs. We get together occasionally, but not all that frequently. We keep up on our lives via words, photos and short videos in our inbox rather than in our living rooms.

So while Mrs. Expat Teacher and I are moving to DC in a little over a month, we don't have a sense of finality with this move. We know that we'll be able to keep in touch with folks that have become important to us. We expect to visit London in the next 5 years. We will continue to receive e-mails, instant messages and blog updates from our friends. We know that our friends have both time and money to visit us in DC.

So the "First of the Last Goodbyes Tour" rolls on this weekend and next weekend, but I don't know how many tears will be shed before we board the plane for the States on August 9th.
