We outscored our opponents 2-1...

if you don't count the inning from hell, the bottom of the 3rd.

Today we played our 7th game of the season. We are now 0-7.

We scored 1 run in the first, to jump out to a lead that I was feeling good about. In the bottom of the 1st, our opponents scored one. We got two runners on base in the 2nd, but didn't score. Our opponents went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 2nd. In the top of 3rd, we also went 1-2-3.

Then the inning from hell started. It started innocently enough with a walk. Then the next batter hit the ball up the middle to what appeared to be an easy double-play ball. The ball hit a patch of grass (we weren't playing on a skinned field) and bounced OVER my shortstops left shoulder and out into shallow left. 1st and 3rd with no outs. The next batter popped up to the second baseman, who dropped it, but got the force play at second. Runner on third scored, though.

This rattled my pitcher. More walks ensued. Then my catcher threw a perfect strike on a steal. Unfortunately, that strike was to my left fielder and not to the 3rd baseman. Runner scored.

The #3 hitter stepped up to hit and crushed the ball toward my right fielder, who broke in on the ball. It landed 20 feet over her head. Clearing the bases and scoring 3.

Virtually no one was untouched in this inning. Everyone made mistakes and mental errors. It was ugly.

We came back and scored 1 run in the top of the 4th. It was my pitcher and she was DEDICATED to scoring. No one was stopping her.

Our opponents went easily in the bottom of the 4th.

Down 13-2, we needed 2 runs to beat the mercy rule and extend the game. The first girl up is my rookie firstbaseman who hits the ball down the left field line for a double. Her first hit to the outfield all year. Then my next three went down with a whimper...Game over.

I tried to play up the positives in the post-game chat. We had the first double ever by our firstbaseman. We had a girl who didn't know what a softball was catch a fly ball to make the final out of the 4th inning. We had lots of baserunners and pretty good contact against a solid pitcher.

We play the 7-0 league leaders on Thursday - Like lambs to the slaugher
