Gratuitous Cornhusker blogging

What is New Year's Day without some college football? Just another day really.

So with great anticipation I awoke this morning to watch my Nebraska Cornhuskers (GO BIG RED!) play the Auburn Tigers in the Cotton Bowl. It was a short night for me with the 8:30 kickoff, so I was pleased to watch the Huskers (GO BIG RED!) jump out to a 7-0 lead on a 80-yard, 15-play drive on their first possession of the game. Auburn intercepted Zac Taylor near the end of the 1st quarter and tied it up.

Then Bill Callahan proceeded to lose the game with horrible play calling. The Husker's defense (GO BIG RED!) was dominating the Auburn offense in the first half, but Callahan decided to call a trick punt deep in his own end. It resulted in a fumble and Auburn having the ball on the Nebraska 14. They scored.

The Huskers (GO BIG RED!) tied the game up on the next possession and it was 14-14 at the half.

The Tigers made some offensive and defensive adjustments at half-time and managed to hit a field goal in the 3rd quarter.

In the 4th quarter, the Huskers (GO BIG RED!) had managed to penetrate deep into Auburn territory. They were at the edge of their place kicker's range. A field goal would have tied the game. On a 2 and 8 with about 2 minutes left, Callahan called a delayed shovel pass, which resulted in a 3 yard loss. This took them beyond the proven range of their place kicker. So on 4th and 11, rather than go for a game tying field goal, Callahan called a pass play that was incomplete. Turnover on downs.

Auburn ran out the clock.

Callahan single-handedly lost the game with 3 bad calls. He shouldn't be fired, but he should be fined. A real man would step up and take the blame. He should voluntarily agree to reduce his salary next year to $1.
