I have a few questions for you

1) Can you name all five members of the Simpson family (yes, the one of the famous cartoon television program)?

2) Can you name the five protected rights in the First Amendment?

Odds are, you probably could do the first one and not the second one. And if so, you're not alone.
Check out what this phone survey showed Americans know better.

And it gets worse when you read what several people thought those First Amendment rights were:

* The right to own pets (mentioned by 21% of the respondents)
* The right to drive a car (17%)
* The right to take the 5th Amendment (38%)

Do we take our freedoms for granted? Is that what this survey shows?

Or does it just show that in America our freedoms have not been challenged for so long that we don't even worry about them, even when we do appreciate and value them?

Or perhaps it's just that we're a modern culture that doesn't care about it's history?

What do you think?

P.S. For the record - the answers are:
1) Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie
2) freedom of religion, speech, the press, assembly and to petition the government
